We are excited to announce a special presentation by Tim Savidge of Three Oaks Engineering on addressing protected aquatic species issues for projects impacting streams and ways to determine if potentially suitable habitat is present in the project area.

The freshwater ecosystems in the southeastern United States are some of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world and they have been imperiled by a myriad of factors. As more and more aquatic species receive protection, environmental professionals working on infrastructure and development projects need guidance on addressing listed aquatic species and how to determine if potentially suitable habitat is present. The bottom line is, there is no simple answer, as some species can occupy a wide range of habitats from small headwater streams up to large rivers, while others have more restrictive habitat requirements. Tim will present his perspective on this issue from over 30 years dealing with these species and figuring out what constitutes suitable habitat.

Tim Savidge is a senior environmental scientist with Three Oaks Engineering, who received a BS in Biology from Guilford College and an MS in Marine Biology/Biological Oceanography from UNCW.  He has been doing T&E surveys, with a focus on aquatic species since the early 1990’s, first with NCDOT and then with the Catena Group and Three Oaks. He has been doing these surveys for a long, long time and still learns something new every year.

Kathy Matthews and Tom Fox from the US Fish and Wildlife Service's (Service) Raleigh office will join Tim after the presentation to answer questions.

Kathy Matthews is a biologist with over 25 years of Federal government experience. Kathy is the Service's lead for development of the SLOPES Agreement for Eastern NC Aquatic Species, which is intended to provide a more consistent and efficient approach to ESA Section 7 determinations and receiving concurrence from the Service. Since 2007, Tom Fox has held various positions in academia, state government, and private industry working with the Threatened and Endangered aquatic species in North Carolina.  Tom comes to the USFWS from Dewberry Engineers, where he led the aquatic surveys group.

Don't miss this unique opportunity to learn from leading experts in the field. Join us for an engaging and informative evening!
