NCAEP Scholarship Award Summary 2009
The scholarship program grew significantly this year, as it has done each year since its inception. We received 44 applications from 9 universities within North Carolina. Congratulations to all the recipients, runners up, and applicants on their academic success. We look forward to hearing from them in the future!
PhD Scholarship:
Scholarship Recipient (Receives $1,000 and a year's membership in NCAEP):
Amy J. Davis, University of North Carolina - Charlotte
Amy has degrees in Biology and Landscape Architecture and was employed as a landscape architect in Charlotte for four years. Currently she is working on a PhD in Geography at UNC Charlotte where she is researching the impacts of urbanization and land use change on forest plant diversity and exotic species spread. She is also leading the implementation of a long-term environmental monitoring plot network in the Charlotte metropolitan area. She is committed to land conservation efforts and serves on the Land Stewardship Committee at the Catawba Lands Conservancy. In her spare time she enjoys hiking, backpacking and gardening.

Masters Scholarship:
Scholarship Recipient (Receives $1,000 and a year's membership in NCAEP):
Sarah Elizabeth Friedl, North Carolina State University
Sarah is a graduate student at the Center for Marine Sciences and Technology at North Carolina State University. She is using sonic telemetry to determine if density-dependent mortality occurs in age-1 spot (Leiostomus xanthurus) in Neuse River estuarine creeks, as well as to estimate natural mortality rates during this important life stage. Sarah received her B.S. from Eastern Michigan University, where she studied Biology and Conservation Resource Management. She started her graduate program at NCSU in the summer of 2008 and has very much enjoyed being able to work with and learn from the local people and fishermen of coastal North Carolina.

Undergraduate Scholarship:
Scholarship Recipient (Receives $1,000 and a year's membership in NCAEP):
Katrina Folsom; Elon University
Katrina is a junior from Cary, NC majoring in Environmental Studies at Elon University. As an Honors Fellow, she is working on a thesis analyzing water use in NC over the past two decades to identify effective conservation policies. She plans to attend graduate school for a degree in environmental policy, with a goal of managing water supply issues in the United States.
