Coordinator for Research and Outreach
The Water Resources Research Institute of The University of North Carolina is seeking to hire a highly motivated professional to coordinate WRRI's research processes, outreach activities, and communications efforts. This position will work closely with the WRRI leadership and other staff to carry out the following principal functions:
--Assisting the Associate Director for Research in developing Institute research priorities and requests for proposals (RFPs); coordinating peer review of proposals; assisting with review of research reports; and managing interactions with external groups linked to WRRI research (an advisory committee, a technical review committee, and consortia of NC municipalities that fund water related research);
--Provide oversight for all outreach programs, including (a) several water resource research conferences, seminars, workshops, and other meetings each year, and (b) all formal outreach communications. The latter duty will require providing content to the Institute's website; overseeing production of a quarterly electronic newsletter; sending information via listserves; and writing news releases;
--Interact directly with a variety of water resource stakeholder groups that can benefit from and/or lend support to Institute programs;
--Work with university research faculty and extension staff, agency managers and scientists, consulting environmental professionals, and leaders of cooperating, water resource-related organizations to identify and implement initiatives that will meet the water resource needs of NC.
--Supervise one Program Coordinator position.
Minimum Experience and Education
This position requires a master's degree in an environmental or water-related discipline, with a minimum of 3 years experience in either water or other natural resource management, land use planning, or environmental education/communications.

Qualifications
Required (Must Have):
- Bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific discipline such as safety, industrial hygiene,
ergonomics, environmental science or manufacturing engineering
- Equivalent environmental, health, and safety (EHS) experience will be considered
- Knowledge of EHS regulations; specifically OSHA (NC DOL) and EPA (NC DENR)
- Familiarity with safety, industrial hygiene, health and environmental programs
- Excellent Oral and Written communication skills
- Ability to teach

- Two years of EHS experience
- A demonstrated exhibited ability to begin working independently and to apply theory and

Responsibilities
The Environmental Health and Safety Associate will possess a high degree of leadership capability. Candidate will be responsible for ensuring the Sanford facility maintains compliance with all Environmental, Health and Safety regulations and will ensure the facility's awareness of all applicable local, state and federal regulations dealing with safety, industrial hygiene, health and environmental issues. EHS Associate will be responsible for facility EHS policies and procedures in addition to providing tools for compliance and enforcement. Serves as a resource for all levels of employee questions and concerns regarding environment, health and safety. Provides training to employees, including right-to-know, general safety, hazardous materials (DOT) and environmental/emergency response. Directs daily activities of an on-site waste treatment contracted employee. Works with facility planning to ensure appropriate action with new processes and or production increases. Ensures proper handling and disposal of all waste from the facility. Provides leadership in emergency situations, including contacting outside agencies as needed and internal response. Provides leadership to the Sanford Safety committee. Leads initiatives to maintain Carolina OSHA Star Program member status.
By virtue of the background and experience, the incumbent is able to work independently and exercise authority in decision-making or problem solving, as well as serve in the capacity of trainer/mentor. Incumbent will lead and guide employees at all levels of the organization in an effort to provide answers to questions, solutions to problems or explain practices or procedure. Position is responsible for developing and presenting communication material to employees/supervisors/managers as needed for EHS related administrative issues. Lastly, incumbent will be responsible and accountable and has authority for making daily decision regarding EHS functions as well as involvement in planning the facility EHS strategy.
